Rough second half dooms Lake Holcombe girls
| Posted: Tuesday, January 24, 2012 12:00 am
HOLCOMBE — Coming off his team’s biggest victory of the season, Lake Holcombe girls basketball coach Jay Geist was concerned about a letdown from his team for Monday night’s game against Eau Claire Immanuel.
It turns out his fears were justified.
The Chieftains were outscored 38-17 in the second half and fell to the Lancers 65-37 in a nonconference contest.
“Very flat-footed,” Geist said of his team. “We couldn’t buy a shot, make a shot. We couldn’t even run up and down the court.”
On Friday night the Chieftains beat Flambeau 54-49. It was Lake Holcombe’s first win over Flambeau since 1991. But Friday night’s game seemed like it was long ago as Monday night’s game unfolded.
The Lancers were able to handle the Lake Holcombe press well and force the Chieftains to play half-court offense for the majority of the game, something Eau Claire Immanuel coach Jim Sydow thought his team would have success with.
“Their (Lake Holcombe) game is to get turnovers, transition baskets, things like that,” Sydow said. “And when they couldn’t press us, couldn’t get transition baskets off the turnovers, then they have to go through a normal halfcourt offense they don’t score as much.”
Lake Holcombe led only once in the game, going on a 7-0 run in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead with just under five minutes left in the half. But that lead was shortlived as the Lancers ended the first half on an 8-0 run to take a seven-point lead into the locker room.
Abbie Hein and Hannah Tiefel each had 18 points for the Lancers (7-3), who have won five games in a row.
By now Chippewa County basketball fans should be familiar with Hein’s potent offensive game. She scored 34 and 25 points, respectively, in early-season wins for Eau Claire Immanuel over New Auburn and Cadott.
“We actually have a pretty good ballclub,” Sydow said. “We’re not very big but we’ve got some really good ball handlers, so kids that can shoot and we’ve got one of the best players in this area of the state in Abbie Hein.”
Once the third quarter began the Lancers wasted little time in scoring, starting the quarter with an 11-3 run to extend their lead into double digits.
Tiffany Marshall led Lake Holcombe (9-3) in scoring with 16 points. Molly Webster and Paige Geist each added six points.
Lake Holcombe’s second leading scorer Brittney Hattamer was limited in the game due to illness and finished with five points.
This marked Lake Holcombe’s fourth game in an eight-day stretch dating back to last Monday and Geist said after this game the team and he could benefit from having three days off before a huge East Lakeland Conference game Friday night at Winter.
The Chieftains are one game back of the Warriors in the ELC with a 5-1 record. Lake Holcombe lost 49-28 in their first meeting of the season on Dec. 9 at Holcombe.
“It’s a big game and we’ve got to get right back down to working on fundamentals,” Geist said. “Busting our butt, starting doing it in practice.”
