Mel-Min's take on the match in the Jackson County Chronicle (published Oct. 6):
Mel-Min volleyball still eyes conference runner-up slot
by Cassandra Colson | Reporter

The Melrose-Mindoro volleyball team may have been feeling a bit of deja vu after last week’s matches against Cochrane-Fountain City and Eau Claire Immanuel.

The Lady Mustangs came close — but ultimately came up short — against those two crucial conference foes, just as they did last year at exactly this time.

“If we can carry the momentum that we had at the end of (last) Thursday’s match against Immanuel, I feel good. I think that we finally started to play more like we’re capable of playing,” said head coach Laurie Boone.

“I just have to keep hope that we’ll peak at the end of the season like we did last year.”

Despite the losses, Boone said she believes Mel-Min will still battle for the conference runner-up slot with Immanuel and Eleva-Strum.

Last Thursday, Mel-Min traveled to Immanuel where they took the match to five sets but ultimately lost the contest. The Lady Mustangs started out with a 25-10 loss in the first set, but they battled back in the second set, picking up a 25-17 win.

“We obviously played better there (and) we started playing much better as a team,” Boone said. “(I was) feeling very good because (I was) seeing now (that) my team has found what it takes and finally snapped out of it.”

However, Mel-Min ended up dropping the third set 25-18. They again rebounded in the fourth set, where Boone said they played “extremely well” and won 25-17.

It was then that the Lady Mustangs felt confident going into the fifth set and maintained an early lead. But they lost several points in a row and had to battle their way back into the set and ended up falling 15-12.

“It was so intense — the noise in that gym. It was really kind of cool,” Boone said. “It gave you the goosebumps for a high school game to be that loud.

“Our girls just fought so hard. I told (them) I was certainly not disappointed in the way they finished that match because they finished strong.”
