Alma/Pepin girls 51, Immanuel Lutheran 42: Guard play lifts Eagles past Lancers
By Justin Harings Leader-Telegram staf
Ali Murray started it. Sophia Reidt finished it.
In between, Abbie Hein nearly stole it.
Guards Murray and Reidt combined for 36 points and took care of a slight lead late to help Alma/Pepin turn back a spirited challenge from Hein and Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, 51-42, in Small Dairyland play Thursday night on the Immanuel Lutheran campus.
"We've been challenging them to step up," Alma/Pepin coach Larry Grisen said. "Sophia and Ali really made a statement tonight, the way they played."
Murray scored 14 of her 16 points in the first half and Reidt added 13 of her 20 in the second half as the Eagles, a conference favorite, won for the first time in three tries. Hein scored nine of her 20 in the third quarter to spearhead a rally that fell just short, sending the Lancers to their third consecutive loss.
The Eagles (1-2, 1-0) took a six-point lead into halftime thanks to 12 second-quarter points from Murray, an aggressive junior who made the all-conference first team last season. Her long 3-pointer beat the first-half buzzer and made it 30-24.
Then Reidt, a senior who also made the all-conference first team, sealed the win by making nine fourth-quarter free throws after the Lancers cut the lead to two at the end of the third quarter.
"Those are legit good guards," Immanuel Lutheran coach Jim Sydow said. "Very good guards."
Hein, who made the Leader-Telegram All-Northwest fourth team last season, nearly willed the Lancers (2-3, 0-2) to their first victory since beating Cadott last week.
After scoring eight points in the first half, the 5-foot-9 junior guard had nine in the third quarter. She buried one of her four 3-pointers and converted a three-point play for six straight points that pulled the Lancers within 37-35 into the fourth quarter.
"We knew Abbie was going to shoot and get her points," Grisen said. "But, if she did happen to miss, we didn't want her crashing the boards and getting putbacks."
Hein, a talented outside shooter and skilled ball-handler who's receiving Division I and II college interest, entered averaging 17.2 points per game. Her 20 points were her third-most this season, behind the 34 and 25 she scored in victories over New Auburn and Cadott.
She outscored the entire Eagles team by two points in the third quarter. But the Eagles, who mixed man-to-man and zone defenses, held Hein to a lone 3-pointer in the fourth as their lead grew and the Lancers' key players piled up fouls.
The Eagles scored 10 consecutive points during one fourth-quarter stretch for a 49-37 lead before Hein hit her fourth and final 3 with 1:22 to play.
In the process, the Lancers struggled to complete their passes, turned over the ball and couldn't connect with Hein, their playmaker, on a consistent basis.
"We had a couple possessions there in the fourth quarter where we were trying to push it and we threw the ball away and gave them extra possessions," Sydow said. "We'd have ended up with it in her hands, but it was the turnovers before we got to the point where we could get the ball into her hands."
The Lancers committed 23 fouls. Three of their starters spent most of the second half in foul trouble. And they shot just 2 of 6 from the free-throw line. The Eagles were 16 of 26 but made 10 of 15 during the fourth quarter. Reidt hit 9 of 10 alone.
Hannah Tiefel and Johanna Ohlmann each added eight points for the Lancers. But 14 of those 16 came in the first half.
"Both these teams went at each other," Sydow said. "That's some pretty competitive basketball. I'm really proud of the girls because our girls competed."
