Game 15: Immanuel @ Melrose-Mindoro

At Melrose-Mindoro
February 2, 2013

Eau Claire Immanuel:  52   (12-3, 7-1)

Melrose-Mindoro:  50  (4-13, 4-5)

NOTE:  The Lady Lancers had another heart-thumper tonight as they came back to get a thrilling victory after trailing the entire second half and pretty much nearly the entire game.  Just when everything appeared to be quite hopeless with less than a minute left, Emily Hein drilled her 4th three-pointer for the night in order to tie the game up, 50-50.  She shot her three from the same spot as she nailed a game-tying three near the end of a game against Blair-Taylor at the Dairyland Crossover held at Melrose-Mindoro last March.  Giving the Lancers great hope and clearly the momentum, the team had a great defensive stop, securing the ball after a Melrose-Mindoro turnover.  Then, on an in-bounds play with misdirection and defensive attention focused on Abbie Hein, Abby Sydow found a wide-open Rachel Schaser at the block who hit the game-winning layup with less than 20 seconds left.  In the remainder, the Lancers were able to prevent Melrose-Mindoro from having any good looks at the basket as the buzzer gave way to a very excited team and Immanuel crowd base.  This is the first time in recent years in which the team was behind for most of the game and then came back to win the game in under less than a minute left.  This was truly an amazing win!

With the victory, the Lancers continue their magical season with a 12-3 best-ever record and now tie a best-ever eight-game winning streak record as well.  This last accomplishment has happened two other times:  2005-06 and 2011-12, both seasons in which the Lancers won the Small Dairyland Conference title.  The team continues to lead the Small Dairyland Conference with a 7-1 conference record and now has a two-game lead over Cochrane-Fountain City who is 6-4 in conference games.

The team was short-handed this evening, now with three key players out with injuries:  Johanna Meyer with a concussion, Johanna Ohlmann with an ankle sprain, and Rebecca Naumann with a foot injury (either stress fracture or tendonitis).  Rhiannon Roehl and Abi Bernthal both were able to step up in the rotation this evening and provide some solid minutes.

Game 14: Independence @ Immanuel

At Eau Claire Immanuel
January 31, 2013

Eau Claire Immanuel:  52   (11-3, 6-1)

Independence:  48  (4-13, 4-6)

NOTE:  The Lancers were nearly upset this evening by the perennial conference powerhouse, the Independence Indees.  But the home Lancers fans were treated to a nail-biting finish as they stood to support their team in a double-overtime victory.  After getting off to a quick 15-5 start in the first quarter, the Lancers scored merely 1 point in the second.  Things started to improve in the third quarter as they pulled ahead to a 6-point lead.  But the Indees were able to tie it at the end of regulation, 39-39.  Both teams scored only 4 points in the first overtime, the Lancers with what appeared to be a 2-point victory as they led 43-41 with possession of the ball and only three seconds left.  But an errant in-bound pass led to an easy Indee score to tie the game once again.  The Lancers were able to convert key free-throws in the second overtime, getting the 52-48 win.  With the win the Lancers continue their best start ever with a record of 11-3.  They have now beaten the Indees three games in a row, amazing in that they have gone 4-18 against them in the past 22 games.

Game 13: Immanuel @ Elmwood

At Elmwood
January 28, 2013

Eau Claire Immanuel:  60   (10-3, 5-1)

Elmwood:  36  (5-11, 3-8)

NOTE:  The Lancers made history this evening by getting off to a program-best start of 10-3!  Last year at this time was the second best start at 9-4.  In a non-conference match-up this evening, they beat the Elmwood Raiders 60-36, a team who had knocked them out of the 2011 WIAA playoffs by beating Immanuel 35-44.  Last year Immanuel beat Elwood in a low-scoring 39-26 match early in the season.  The key to tonight's game was getting off to a hot start, scoring 24 points in the 1st quarter.  The Lady Lancers now have a 6-0 start since Christmas break, even without getting in many practices due to so many games.  The largest winning streak in program history is eight, able to be accomplished last season (2011-12) and also the 2005-06 season, both seasons in which the Lancers won the Small Dairyland Conference title.  Also keep in mind that the program has had only five double-digit winning seasons, something that can easily be overlooked with the success of the past two years.  Immanuel will be tested once again in a conference game against Independence on Thursday, January 31, a traditionally strong program which is well coached.

MaxPrep Rankings have been updated for how Wisconsin teams place in comparison to each other. Immanuel's ranking is as follows:

TEAM RANK 218
Here's a graph as to how the MaxPreps ranking is changing through the season.  As has happened in previous years, the Christmas break tends to stagnate the ranking.  But once the team starts up again, improvement begins:
