Game 24: Hillsboro @ Immanuel (WIAA Regional Semifinal)

WIAA Regional Semifinal
at Eau Claire Immanuel
March 9, 2012

Eau Claire Immanuel (#3):  52 (19-5, 10-3)
Hillsboro (#11):  40 (14-10, 7-7)

NOTE:  The Immanuel Lancers are going to their first WIAA Regional Final ever!  They are now among the final 32 teams in Division 5.  Tomorrow they will meet up with #2 seeded New Lisbon, a team Hillsboro beat twice during the season.  The game will be away and will start at 7 pm.  New Lisbon beat Eleva-Strum, 34-29, to obtain their opportunity to host the WIAA Regional Final.  Tonight was a very special night in that it was very likely the largest crowd ever at an Immanuel girls game.  The fieldhouse was packed with Immanuel fans loudly cheering for their team.  Since the synodical grade school basketball tournament is being held here in Eau Claire this weekend, many came out to support the Lancers.  We thank them for their great support!  In addition, John Casper from the Eau Claire Leader-Telelgram was here to report (see below).  The L-T photographer also took some great shots (see online photo album).

From the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram:
Immanuel girls 52, Hillsboro 40: Hein propels Lancers to regional final

By John Casper Jr. Leader-Telegram staff
The Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran girls basketball team is going places it's never been, and Abbie Hein is leading the way.
The junior guard had 21 points, six assists and five rebounds in leading the Lancers to a 52-40 victory over Hillsboro in a WIAA Division 5 regional semifinal on campus Friday night.
"It feels really good," said Hein, who's receiving college interest from all levels and already holds Immanuel's all-time scoring record. "We've been playing as a team lately. It's so much fun to be a part of this."
It's the first time in school history Immanuel won two playoff games in the same season. The third-seeded Lancers (19-5) can win the school's first WIAA regional title in either boys or girls basketball by beating second-seeded New Lisbon (19-4) on the road tonight.
"This whole thing, being seeded third, is uncharted territory," Lancers coach Jim Sydow said. "It's special. This group of girls has come together."
They take their cues from Hein, who raises the play of everyone around her.
"She's a special player," Hillsboro coach Mark Kocyan said. "She has the ability to shoot well beyond the 3-point line, and it's a very quick release. If you don't have your hand up, you don't have a chance. She's good at getting to the basket off the dribble with either hand and because she can shoot you have to stay up on her, so that sets up the drive. When we came off the help, she found the open person."
That's exactly what happened Friday night. Hein knocked down four 3-pointers and had 15 points in the first half, helping the Lancers build a 25-15 halftime lead. When the Tigers (14-10) paid a little more attention to her, she got to the basket or found an open teammate.
Hein had five of her six assists in the second half, three during an 11-2 run to open the second half that all but put away the game.
But the Lancers are far from a one-man show.
Sophomore Rachel Schaser was the beneficiary of two of Hein's assists and finished with eight points, giving the Lancers a much-needed contribution inside after forward Johanna Ohlmann left the game in the first quarter with an ankle injury. Freshman Emily Hein, Abbie's younger sister, had nine points. Senior Hannah Tiefel scored seven points and grabbed five offensive rebounds.
They all contributed on defense as Hillsboro made just 5 of 28 field goals in the first three quarters. The Lancers had a 50-27 lead late before Hillsboro ended on a 13-2 run.
Tonight's opponent, New Lisbon, won the Scenic Bluffs Conference but twice lost to Hillsboro, including a 35-30 setback last Thursday.
"It'd be tremendous for these girls," Sydow said of a regional championship. "They've worked so hard for what they've done."

Immanuel Lutheran, the No. 3 seed, can continue its upswing against No. 11 seed Hillsboro, a 14-9 team that took fifth in the Scenic Bluffs and upset Elmwood on Tuesday. It'll be a test, but give the Lancers an edge on campus.
HARINGS' PICK: Imm. Lutheran.

Also to be noted, Immanuel is listed as #10 in the top ten teams in the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram coverage area (this includes all divisions of basketball, meaning all sized-schools!):

Game 23: Cochrane-Fountain City @ Immanuel (WIAA Regional Quarterfinal)

WIAA Regional Quarterfinal
at Eau Claire Immanuel
March 6, 2012

Eau Claire Immanuel (#3):  70 (18-5, 10-3)
Cochrane-Fountain City (#14):  44 (7-13, 4-9)

NOTE:  The Lady Lancers broke away from CFC tonight to get a Regional victory!  During it's history, Immanuel had only gotten four regional victories.  This makes it number five!  Last Monday the Lancers beat CFC 64-52.  Now the Lancers move on to their next opponent on Friday ...  Hilsboro.  Hillsboro, a # 11 seed, beat #6 seeded Elmwood, 59-48.  According to the Eau Claire Leader-Telelgram, Hillsboro shot 21 for 21 from the free-throw line.  There are a couple of errors in the L-T box score for this evening, points between two players.  The WSN box score has it correct.

WIAA Girls Playoffs Breakdown

Justin Harings of the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram writes the following about the WIAA tournament which begins this evening:

WIAA girls basketball playoffs division-by-division breakdown

Division 5
Area teams involved: Spooner Sectional, Abbotsford bracket — Owen-Withee, Lake Holcombe, Greenwood, Cornell, Prairie Farm, New Auburn, Bruce, Gilman. La Crosse Central Sectional, Neillsville bracket — Chippewa Falls McDonell, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, Alma/Pepin, Elmwood, Augusta, Independence, Eleva-Strum, Plum City, Alma Center Lincoln, Gilmanton.
Overview: After advancing to the sectional semifinals in Division 4 last season, Eastern Cloverbelt runner-up Owen-Withee (19-3) is a No. 1 seed in the Spooner Sectional. The Blackhawks open against No. 16 Granton (0-12), which didn’t play a varsity schedule in the conference this season. The No. 2 seed is East Lakeland runner-up Lake Holcombe (17-5), which starts off against No. 15 Rib Lake (1-19) on Tuesday. Prentice (15-7), which qualified for state last season and won the Marawood North championship, is the No. 3 seed. The No. 4 seed is Greenwood (12-10), which took sixth in the Eastern Cloverbelt. Other teams involved include No. 5 Clayton (11-10), No. 6 Turtle Lake (13-9), No. 7 Cornell (8-12), No. 8 Wisconsin Valley Lutheran (8-14), No. 9 Loyal (7-15), No. 10 Marshfield Columbus (6-15), No. 11 Prairie Farm (3-19), No. 12 New Auburn (3-17), No. 13 Bruce (4-15) and No. 14 Gilman (0-20).
No. 1 McDonell, coming off a top-half finish in the Western Cloverbelt for the first time since 2004-05, leads one half of the La Crosse Central Sectional. The Macks, who started fast and tied for third in the conference, face No. 16 Gilmanton (7-13) — the team they beat in their season  opener — on Tuesday. Scenic Bluffs champion New Lisbon (17-4) is the No. 2 seed. Immanuel Lutheran (17-5), which rode a second-half hot streak to a share of the Small Dairyland title, is the No. 3 seed and opens against No. 14 Cochrane-Fountain City (7-12). The Lancers beat the Pirates, 64-52, just last week. Alma/Pepin (15-5), the other champion in the Small Dairyland, is the No. 5 seed. Elmwood (15-7), the fourth-place finisher in the Dunn-St. Croix, could cause some trouble as the No. 6 seed. An improved team from Augusta (13-9) is the No. 7 and hosts No. 10 Eleva-Strum (11-11), a co-champion in the Large Dairyland. Others teams involved include No. 4 Wonewoc-Center (16-6), No. 8 Independence (13-9), No. 9 Royall (13-9), No. 11 Hillsboro (13-9), No. 12 Brookwood (9-13), No. 13 Plum City (9-11) and No. 15 Lincoln (5-15).
Underdog nobody wants to play: Out of the Dunn-St. Croix, Elmwood could make a Division 5 run as a No. 6 seed. The Raiders beat Boyceville — twice — Elk Mound and Alma/Pepin. They’ve won four straight and six of seven. With a win, they could meet Immanuel Lutheran on Friday. The Lancers beat the Raiders, 39-26, on Dec. 10.
Players to watch: Immanuel Lutheran guard Abbie Hein is a game-changer. She can handle the ball, drill it from 3-point range and get to the rim. And she’s the all-time leading scorer for a program that won its first conference championship since 2006 this season. Perhaps most importantly, an improved supporting cast is making a difference. Led by Hein, the Lancers are threatening to make some noise.
Also keep an eye on standouts like McDonell’s Sarah Schoch, Augusta’s Allie Nelson and Lake Holcombe’s Tiffany Marshall. Alma/Pepin can rely on a pair of good guards in Sophia Reidt and Ali Murray.
Team that can make a run: Bringing back all five starters and dropping to Division 5 bode well for Owen-Withee. Of the team’s three losses, two came to undefeated Division 4 power Neillsville. The other was a one-point loss to Spencer — another Division 4 team — before the holidays. The school reached the Division 4 state title match in volleyball this fall. The basketball team — coached by Al Guthman, the winningest girls coach in state history — could be going back to the big stage for the first time since 2005.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Preview

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Division 5: Girls basketball tournament preview

LA CROSSE CENTRAL SECTIONAL

Defending champion: River Ridge.
Top seeds: Chippewa McDonell (16-6), No. 3 Seneca (22-0).
Other top teams: New Lisbon (17-4), Belmont (19-3), Potosi (16-6), Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran (17-5), Alma/Pepin (15-5).
Lowdown: Seneca, the Ridge and Valley champion, has won all but three games by double digits. Senior forward Kalli Boland leads the team with 18.1 ppg. McDonell, the other No. 1 seed, tied for third in the Cloverbelt West behind Eau Claire Regis and Osseo Fairchild. New Lisbon, which won the Scenic Bluffs, received the No. 2 seed on McDonell's side of the bracket. Two other teams in the top half of the bracket are Dairyland Small co-champs Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran and Alma/Pepin. Immanuel Lutheran junior guard Abbie Hein led the league with 20.4 ppg.

WIAA Tournament - Pierce County Herald Article

The following was an interesting article in the Pierce County Herald about the regional Immanuel is in:

Girls hoops' regional tourneys begin tonight

All five Pierce County girls prep basketball teams will be in action in the first round of WIAA regional tournaments this evening.

Two of those teams will be in county playing their first round games. No. 7 seed Prescott will host No. 10 seed Black River Falls and No. 6 seed Elmwood hosts No. 11 seed Hillsboro.

For an 11th seed the Tigers of Hillsboro are pretty good. They only finished fifth in a very competitive Scenic Bluffs Conference but they have a 13-9 overall record. They are led by a pair of sharp-shooting guards, juniors Hilary Stanek and Ali Brey, each averaging 15.4 and 10.1 points per game. Another junior guard, C.J. Hofmeister, averages over seven points per game and is the team's third leading scorer.

The top-heavy nature of Elmwood and Plum City's semi-sectional bracket (the top five teams in the Scenic Bluffs all have winning records and the whole sectional bracket has five ranked teams in it) in Division 5 meant match-ups that would pit teams of similar records such as Hillsboro and Elmwood (the Raiders are 15-7), making the seeds only important in terms miles traveled for a Tuesday ballgame. This, plus unfamiliarity of the coaches with the other teams in the bracket outside of one's own conference meant one tough seeding meeting and perhaps lower seeds than perhaps Elmwood and or Plum City would have liked.

"It is what it is," EHS head coach Mike Birtzer said. "You have the play the games regardless of the opponent we feel confident in ourselves given who we've played and how we're playing right now (The Raiders have won their last four in a row and six out of their last seven).

Like Elmwood, PC has been a late roll, winning four in a row. But that only got them to a No. 13 seed and they have to travel the many hours and miles to Wonewoc Center to take on a 19-4 Wolves squad who is the No. 4 seed. This is only the second winning season in the last 10 years for WC. Their top two scorers are 5-3, senior guard Stefanie Kopenhafer and 5-11 junior center Erin Laack.

A win by the Blue Devils could set up a Friday showdown between PC and their rivals Alma/Pepin in Alma if the No. 5 seeded Eagles can down No. 12 seed Brookwood tonight. Elmwood's semifinal opponent will more than likely be No. 14 ranked and third seed Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, 17-5 overall, in Eau Claire.
Tonight's game will test the theory playing a schedule of mostly Division 3 and 4 schools will give Plum City and Elmwood a leg up in Division 5 competition. ...

Rob Hernandez of the Wisconsin State Journal based in Madison also picks Immanuel:

WIAA girls basketball: Hernandez and Semrau forecast the tournament

Division 5

Hernandez's take

What to watch: Eastern Six Rivers Conference rivals Black Hawk and Barneveld split their regular-season meetings and will probably meet again in a sectional semifinal. But Milwaukee Heritage Christian (18-4), which played a rugged regular-season schedule, stands in their way of a trip to the Kohl Center. Seneca (22-0) is unbeaten, but its weak non-conference schedule won’t help the Indians handle the heavyweight that comes flying at them from the upper half of the La Crosse Central sectional.
See you at the Kohl Center: Owen-Withee, Wausau Newman, Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, Milwaukee Heritage Christian.
