Game 11: Immanuel @ McDonell Central

At Eau Claire Immanuel
January 24, 2013

Eau Claire Immanuel:  63   (8-3, 5-1)

McDonell Central:  44  (8-6, 4-4)

NOTE:  The Lancers played a signature game this evening against McDonell Central, winning decisively by playing well, especially in the second half.   Since McDonell Central is in Immanuel's Region, this key win should give Immanuel a great advantage in terms of how seeding will likely end up for the WIAA tournament.  Our prayers go out for Johanna Meyer who suffered a concussion in a violent collision near the end of the game.

From the Chippewa Herald:

Hein, Immanuel girls use big second half to down McDonell 63-44

To beat Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran, the McDonell girls basketball team knew it would to need to contain Abbie Hein.
Easier said than done.
The Immanuel senior scored 28 points and the Lancers used a dominant second half to take down the Macks in a nonconference game 63-44 Thursday night at McDonell.
“We can be pretty good,” Immanuel coach Jim Sydow said. “The difference this year than in the past is we can shoot and we can score. It used to be in the past where we’d just play defense. Well this team can score.”
Trailing 29-27 at the half, Eau Claire Immanuel (8-3) scored the first nine points of the second half to set the tone for the rest of the contest.
McDonell (8-6) was able to cut the deficit to 43-37 on a Tessa McChesney basket early in the fourth quarter, but the Lancers responded by scoring six straight points to gain a 12-point lead and never led by less than 11 the rest of the way.
Apart from Hein —who’s averaging close to 20 points per game — Rachel Schaser had 15 points for Immanuel, while Johanna Meyer had eight.
McChesney led McDonell with 13 points, while Sydney Schemenauer chipped in with 12. Lexi Raihle and Gabby Geissler had nine and eight points, respectively.
Part of the reason for McDonell’s struggles on both ends of the court — especially in the second half — was the absence of junior point guard Jalen Knowlton for much of the contest. Knowlton, who leads the Macks in scoring, started the game but didn’t play for the majority of the second and third quarters as she was suffering from flu-like symptoms.
“Jalen wasn’t feeling well so we sat her the entire third quarter,” McDonell assistant coach Brad Wright said. “That doesn’t help, obviously. The press they put on showed it. We were just outmanned a little bit.”
In the second half, Immanuel outscored McDonell by a 36-15 margin — including 16-6 in the tide-turning third quarter.
One of the other areas McDonell struggled in was rebounding, especially in the second half. The Macks rarely got second chances after missed shots on offense yet gave up many offensive rebounds to the Lancers on the other end.
“At halftime we realized we needed to concentrate on getting the defensive rebounds and not giving them second and third shots,” Wright said. “We weren’t crashing the boards at all. It was like we were flat-footed.”
In the first half, Hein almost single-handedly kept her team in the game — scoring 16 of the Lancers’ 27 points while drilling two of her three 3-pointers as part of 9-0 Immanuel run midway through the second quarter.
However, the Macks battled back, scoring 13 of the game’s next 15 points with Schemenauer knocking down a 3-pointer from the top of the key just before the halftime buzzer.
But Immanuel — which currently leads the Small Dairyland Conference — took control immediately after the break and wasn’t seriously threatened the rest of the way.
“This was a nice win for us. We’ve had five practices and four games since Jan. 14,” Sydow said. “Our kids take off three weeks for Christmas so this like a whole new season for us.”
McDonell gets back into Western Cloverbelt action on Friday when it heads to Stanley-Boyd.
