NOTE: The Immanuel Lancers were tested tonight against Regis, a two-time D4 state tournament opponent and 2011 D4 State Champs. The press in the 3rd quarter of the game led to trouble for the Lancers who couldn't consistently get the ball upcourt. While the Lancers let the game get away from them at that point, they battled back in the 4th quarter and kept the game close until the very end, tying the score with less than a minute to go. Nevertheless, Regis came through at the end to get the victory.

Tuura's late basket gives Ramblers win over Lancers

Eau Claire Regis had an answer for Immanuel Lutheran superstar Abbie Hein. Her name was Courtney Tuura.

Hein led the Lancers to an eight-point halftime lead, but Tuura scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the second half and hit a go-ahead jumper with 23 seconds left to give the Ramblers a 51-47 win Thursday on Regis' home court.

"I think everybody had a moment tonight where you could applaud their effort," Regis coach Cody Rumpel said. "Great effort by Courtney in the second half to put us over the hump and give us the lead for good."

The Ramblers got back into the game in the third quarter thanks to their full-court pressure defense, which led to turnovers by the Lancers and easy baskets for the Ramblers on the other end.

"We didn't handle well in the middle of the third quarter, and that got them back in the game," Immanuel Lutheran coach Jim Sydow said. "That was the difference in the game. They handled the ball better than us."

Tuura got going for Regis late in the third quarter. With the Ramblers trailing 31-30, she grabbed an offensive rebound in the middle of three Lancers and put it back in while getting fouled. After making the free throw, she stole a pass, drove coast-to-coast and made another shot while getting fouled. After the free throw, Regis suddenly had a five-point lead.

The Lancers fought back in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 42 with three minutes to play. That's when the Ramblers' Rachel Liming got an open look at a 3-pointer. She hadn't scored all game, but she never hesitated and swished the 3.

"That was a humongous shot by Rachel, but that's one of our senior leaders," Rumpel said. "She feels comfortable stepping up for us."

Regis held a 47-44 lead with less than a minute to play when Hein hit her sixth 3-pointer of the game to tie it.

"She had a great night tonight shooting the ball," Rumpel said. "No matter how hard we tried, we got hands in her face but she kept knocking them down."

Hein finished with a game-high 24 points, but Tuura got the last laugh. She caught a pass in the right corner, took a dribble and pulled up for a jumper that gave Regis a 49-47 lead. After the Lancers missed a shot, two free throws sealed the win for the Ramblers.

"Great high school basketball game tonight," Sydow said. "It's too bad we didn't make that shot there at the end. It would've been fun to go a little further. We saw some real good basketball players tonight. Regis will be fine in their conference. They've got a nice program."

Thursday's game was the season opener for the Ramblers, who are coming off a 25-2 season but are trying to replace their top four scorers who were lost to graduation.

Rachel Schaser scored 14 points for the Lancers, who fell to 1-1 on the year.
