Durand sneaks past Immanuel

Morganne Gruber led the way for Durand with 20 points and four 3-pointers as the Panthers’ girls basketball team barely escaped with a one-point, 51-50, victory over the Immanuel Lutheran Lancers.

Marissa Koller’s only points for Durand was a game winning layup with 34 seconds left in the game.

Emily Hein scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers while Johanna Meyer scored 13 points and one 3-pointer to lead Immanuel Lutheran.

2013 WIAA Bracket Setup Update

The WIAA has updated its breakdown of teams for the 2013 WIAA basketball tournament from what it was in July.  Here is the WIAA setup. The Immanuel girls will be in Regional D of Sectional 1 (Spooner).  This is quite a change from the past few years.  Last year Immanuel was in Half Bracket A of Sectional 3.  The Regional bracket includes the following teams:

Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran (3-1) is averaging 61.75 points in its first four games.
Senior Abbie Hein, who averaged more than 19 points per game last season, is leading the way again. The sharp shooter is putting in 22.8 points per game this year. Junior forward Rachel Schaser has made for a nice second option in the paint with her 10.2 points per game. Sophomore guard Johanna Meyer has also emerged as a big threat, averaging 10.2 points a game. And sophomore Emily Hein is pretty dangerous too. Points won't be hard to come by for the Lancers this year.

NOTE:  The Lady Lancers did not bring their A game tonight as they lost in their first conference game of the season.  Three key players fouled out during the game:  Abbie Hein, Rachel Schaser, and Abby Sydow.  While some of the younger players stepped up, it wasn't enough to overcome the Gilmanton Panthers.  Hopefully this loss will inspire the team to come and compete each and every game.

Defending state champion Heritage Christian opens at #1 in the WisSports.net Coaches Poll. This comes at no surprise as they return nearly their whole team from last season. Head coach Terry Bennett will need to replace Moriah Begin after she decided to attend a prep school in Virginia but with Jazmine Harris, among others they will again be the favorite in Division 5. Perennial power Barneveld begins at #2 while state runner-up Owen-Withee is #3. The rest of the top 5 includes, Assumption and Potosi.
