WIAA Basketball Plan for 5 Divisions

The WIAA has announced a new basketball divisional placement model on its website:
http://www.wiaawi.org/index.php?id=427
This plan has been recommended for discussion by the WIAA Board of Control. It breaks up all the member schools into 5 divisions instead of 4. It also bumps up private schools who meet two criteria:
  • In school districts with more than one public high school, any nonpublic school located in that district would be moved up one division from where its enrollment would normally place it.
  • If a nonpublic school is located in a district that has one public high school with an enrollment within that of the largest 30 (1695 students for 2010) basketball schools in the membership, the nonpublic school would be moved up one division from where its enrollment would normally place it.
  • Note: If a nonpublic schoolʼs enrollment lands them within the smallest 30 schools of a given division, that nonpublic school would not be moved up a division.
Since Immanuel resides in the Eau Claire school district where there are two public schools in that district, Immanuel would be bumped up to Div. 4 of 5 divisions. According to the criteria, Immanuel would be the smallest school in that division (see #391 in the link below) and would play against schools nearly 3 times its size in the WIAA tournament series:

Summer Basketball Review

The girls' summer season has now come to an end. The events included the summer league games, the ILHS girls basketball camp, and the concluding Winona tournament.

Season record: 6-7.
Record against Div. 3 WI (or AA MN): 2-5
Record against Div. 4 WI (or A MN): 4-2

The summer games give the girls a chance to play the game together during the summer and hopefully build upon their skills for the upcoming year. Many of the competing programs were able to field full (or nearly full) roster teams. Since some of the Immanuel girls live at a distance in different areas of the country, we didn't have that luxury. Several of the girls also had to work or had other activities. Most of the time the team had about 7 players, only 5 for the final tournament. In spite of this, there were a lot of promising signs during the summer season. It will be exciting to see what happens this coming year when all the girls are put together.

Girls that participated during the season were:
  • Renea Markus (Sr., 2010)
  • Amy Roehl (Sr., 2010)
  • Alison Froelich (Jr., 2011)
  • Heidi Lau (Jr., 2011)
  • Katie Oster (Jr., 2011)
  • Erin Markus (So., 2012)
  • Hannah Tiefel (So., 2012)
  • Abbie Hein (Fr., 2013)
  • Johanna Ohlmann (Fr., 2013)
  • Abby Sydow (Fr., 2013)
Some key players from last year's varsity team that were unable to play due to living at a distance:
  • Katherine Kazemba (Sr., 2010)
  • Jessica Ohlmann (Sr., 2010)

Summer Tournament: Winona

Game 1: Immanuel 20; Chatfield 41
Game 2: Immanuel 29; Randolph 23
Game 3: Immanuel 49; Wabasha-Kellogg 37

The girls fared well today, going 2-1 and placing 5th in the Winona varsity tournament. The squad was short-handed and young, yet battled in spite of having only 5 players who obviously had to play the distance with no breathers. Thanks and kudos to the five who made it, including:
  • Katie Oster (Jr., 2011)
  • Hannah Tiefel (So., 2012)
  • Abbie Hein (Fr., 2013)
  • Johanna Ohlmann (Fr., 2013)
  • Abby Sydow (Fr., 2013)
